U.S. bishops advocate death-penalty ban

By UNITED PRESS INTERNATIONAL

WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops is initiating a political and public-relations campaign to eliminate the death penalty in the United States.

The bishops were outspoken in their criticism of those who support abortion rights as "cooperating in evil" during the 2004 presidential campaign. But the bishops were silent on the hundreds of executions carried out by federal and state authorities each year.

Twenty-five years after it last issued a major statement on capital punishment, the conference now believes public opinion is shifting against the practice, largely because DNA evidence often exonerates convicts on death row, the Washington Post reported.

"I think the DNA evidence has really shaken up people. I think this is a moment, a very special moment, where we can talk about this and people are ready to listen," said Cardinal Theodore E. McCarrick of Washington. World Peace Herald

Michael Schiavo on 'Nightline'

As someone from the Tampa Bay area, and quite familiar with this case, the Nightline interview with Shiavo and Felos was as transparent as it gets for me. He is not the poor soul the media would have you believe he is.

When will someone who interviews this guy, ask him why- if he's moved on with his life, and is cohabitating and fornicating with his new girlfriend, why then does he get to be viewed by the press, and more importantly the courts, as the loving husband - when in fact, he has moved on and is not? The media allows Schiavo (and Felos) to paint this picture of a poor soul sitting by Terri's bed every day sobbing and praying for her.

The culture of death is all around us. Pray hard folks!

Schiavo's parents pin hope on bill

TALLAHASSEE -- With a judge scheduled to pull Terri Schiavo's life-giving feeding tube in less than a week, her family lobbied state lawmakers Sunday to again intervene in the internationally watched right-to-die case.

Joined by 300 at a rally at the foot of the Capitol, they urged the Florida Legislature to move quickly on a bill that supporters say could prevent the severely brain-damaged woman's impending death.
